THE Wits Basketball teams lost to arch rival Vaal University of Technology (VUT) at the Gauteng University Basketball League, which kicked off at the Wits Hall 29 basketball courts on Tuesday.
The final score of the night for the first team men’s division saw VUT take the lead with 71 points to the Wits Horny Bucks’ 58 points. The women’s final score of the night saw Wits Lady Bucks lag behind with 49 points to VUT women’s 54 points.
Both games were intense, especially the men’s match where rebounds were awarded to the Wits Horny Bucks after a foul. Coaches on both sides were shouting at the players and referee.
Wits Horny Bucks head coach Tshiamo Ngakane said “We had quite a rough game today. We were a little rusty coming back from the [research] break”.
The team is in the playoffs however and Ngakane mentioned that it was a matter of “cleaning up the game.” The VUT men’s team played a very good game where their offence was quick and strategic, Ngakane referred to the team as “a little bit more prepared and hungrier” for this week’s game.
“The ladies did do a good job but they did not get a win,” said assistant coach for the women’s first team, Manyani Maseko.
“We obviously got to go back to the drawing board. We need to work on things like finishing,” said Maseko.
The ladies struggled on the offence where goals were not
scored hindering their chances of winning the game.
The Wits Lady Bucks are expected to play again at Tshwane University of Technology on September 11. The Wits Horny Bucks next game is still to be announce.
Wits Lady Bucks captain, Modiegi Mokoka, says they are ready for their next game against North West University. “We are accustomed to their playing, so there is nothing that the ladies are worried about,” said Mokoka.
